How It Started

Halloween began as the festival of Samhain. It was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe. At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits got really thin. So basically The Celts had a big party.

Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day.

Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For guests, offer a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity.

Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause someone to fall.

Keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.

Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Create icky ice cubes. Put small plastic spiders, bats or eyeballs in empty ice cube trays. Fill with water, and freeze as usual. You’ll have the perfect ice cubes for your punch bowl or cold drinks!

The Day of the Dead, Mexico

Although not strictly a Halloween celebration, Mexico’s Day of the Dead occurs around the same time. It’s a public holiday where families pay their respects to deceased relatives and friends. It is characterized by elaborate costumes, feasts and decorations. The skull is the most prolific symbol of the holiday, and celebrants often don skeletal masks and makeup to mark the occasion. They gather in graveyards to eat, drink and remember their loved ones. It may sound rather morbid, but its an uplifting celebration that honors the dead and celebrates life.

Leaving Bread and Water Out, Austria

In Austria, celebrants traditionally leave out bread and water before going to bed on Halloween night. The reasoning behind the tradition is that it was believed bread and water would welcome the souls of the deceased back to Earth. Accompanying the food and water is usually a lantern that’s kept burning through the night. It’s certainly better for the teeth than bags full of candy!

Make frightfully good party favors. Want your guests to take home a treat or two? Give away caramel apples or fill potion bottles with candy.

Festival of Hungry Ghosts, China

The Festival of Hungry Ghosts is not a Halloween celebration per se, and it occurs in August rather than October. However, the Ghost Festival is Asia’s nearest equivalent to Halloween. Similarly, the deceased are believed to visit the living on this day, and food and other offerings are set out during the yearly festival to welcome the dead back to Earth. Burning paper and other offerings is part of the tradition. The holiday traces its history back to Buddhist origins.

Costume Tips

Superhero Character

Boys and girls have long loved the exciting freedom and power of dressing up like Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Thor, and Power Rangers for Halloween. (As a former Spider-Man, I can confirm this to be correct).

Real-life superhero.

One of my uncles is a paramedic. When we get together for family dinners, he’s always a big hit with the kids. They want to hear about his ambulance, about how he helps people, about how the siren works, and more. Kids instinctively love police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and all the people who make their world a safer place and they love to imitate them. Don’t forget about teachers (a little gym teacher costume would be cute!), crossing guards, astronauts, and explorers, too. All of these careers require that their practitioners be physically literate.

Animal Real Or Fiction

I read about a kid who said her costume choice this year is a cat, this made me realize how active an animal costume can be. Animals, Why? Well, because bats need to hang upside down on the monkey bars, of course. Cats climb, monkeys swing, insects fly, snakes slither, and frogs hop. Any animal costume is going to have an inherent element of activity. And we’ve even got a fun activity that you can do with your little monkeys and bats to help them develop balance and coordination (it would be a great idea for a Halloween party if you happen to be throwing one this year).

Circus, TV Kids Show Character

Compelling colors, amazing tricks, and death-defying feats combine to create so many wonderful and active circus costume ideas. Acrobats, tightrope walkers, and trapeze artists are all excellent choices for active kids. And don’t forget the clowns! Some of the greatest circus props like diabolos, devil sticks and juggling balls are perfect accoutrements for fanciful clowns to bring with them as they trick-or-treat.

Athlete, Game, Hunter, Or Sports

Whether you’ve got a sports fan who loves a particular player, or a child who enjoys a certain Olympic sport, the possibilities for active costumes inspired by the sports world are endless. This year my neighbor has decided to dress up as an Olympic gymnast. He’s always doing flips and splits and backbends in the yard next door, so I love that he’s decided to use his body’s strengths to his advantage by dressing the part. And I know lots of little hockey players, soccer superstars, dancers, and tennis prodigies who would probably love to do the same.

Ideas for Party Music

The practices of Halloween mostly comes from Celtic paganism in the British Isles, and their feast of Samhain, the new year. They believed it was the time when ghosts and spirits came out to haunt, and the Celts would appease the spirits by giving them treats. Thank you for that. I just love candy.
